SEO providers can sometimes get confused when choosing the right keywords. Keywords are an important aspect of SEO. Professionals encourage their clients to focus on meaningful metrics besides keyword ranking but the main factor is that ranking for SEO keywords will result in traffic to your website.
Keeping track of your keywords is not free. Whether you spend a lot of time manually checking the rankings or your resources on keyword rank tracking, you have no limit when it comes to the number of keywords to track per website.
Do keyword research
Keywords do not materialise out of the thin air. Even more, you cannot assume that you know what keywords online users are using to search and what your website should be ranking for. That is why you need to start with research. There is a lot of information out there on how to research successfully but I will discuss a few steps below.
Which web pages rank for what?
I am not the first person to recommend doing keyword research by looking at what you rank for. Learn to go to the google search console and begin your research. Sometimes, google search console data can be unreliable but it comes straight from Google so you cannot ignore it.
Choose your landing pages
After identifying the keywords you wish to rank for, assign them to the right landing pages. You should have identified your target pages during the keyword research. The number of landing pages will influence the answer to our question about the number of keywords to track.
The number of keywords to track
Now that you and your SEO Company have decided which pages you want to optimise as your landing pages, you should know the number of keywords to optimise for each page. Some pages may focus on only one query. It is easier for web pages to rank highly if they focus on a single topic so you need to focus on 2 or 3 primary keywords per web page that are variations of rewording. It is difficult to target four or more keywords because there is limited space in the Meta description and title. After determining the range of keywords per web page, you can now estimate how many keywords you will track.
Consider the number of landing pages and multiply the number by the range of keywords per web page and then multiply the number of your organic landing page by 2.5 to get the average range.
Track your keyword rankings
While it is a possibility, you are probably not going to manually track your keyword rankings by searching on google every day. Fortunately, there are a lot of options available to help you track your keywords.
What to watch for when tracking ranking
After your SEO providers have done keyword research and assigned terms to target your landing pages and signed up for a subscription tool, you should work on staying on top of the ranking. You should set up ranking position change alerts and know how you are performing and adjust accordingly.
